What can you tell readers about yourself?
Hello I’m Sen, Born and raised in Seoul South Korea, I first started tattooing in 2006. When I was younger I saw the tattoo of a guitarist from my favorite punk band and my first thought where: I want to be someone who gives people tattoos instead of someone who only wears tattoos. I still feel the same today, but tattoos are illegal in my country South Korea, so it wasn’t easy for me to find a place to learn about tattooing. But with the development of the internet I found a place where I could learn and so I started to learn how to tattoo.
Why did you decide to specialize in Japanese tattooing?
When I started tattooing my interests were broader than just Japanese Tattoo and the Irezumi genre. I initially started tattooing in genres like Chicano Fine Line Tattoo and color Realistic tattoos. The more I learned about tattooing, the more I was drawn to the Japanese tattoo style & the irezumi genre, so I started focusing more on this style.
What do you do to reach this high level in the Japanese Tattoo?
I find it difficult to say about myself that my work is of a high level, I am too modest for that, but I have been working as a professional tattoo artist for 18 years. The other artists and big names from the Tattoo industry give me the inspiration and motivation to do my thing. Every time I work on a tattoo design I push myself to do better than the previous one.
Where do you work now? Can you tell us something about your Tattoo studio?
I currently work in my own Tattoo studio in Seoul South Korea. My tattoo studio is called: “Outlaw-Ink” and is located in Gangnam, a trendy and lively district in Seoul.
You have worked at many international tattoo conventions and done many guest spots. What can you tell us about that? Do you feel any differences in the tattoo culture between South Korea and other countries?
Tattoo Conventions and guest spots always give inspiration and help me grow in terms of my work. I love places where great artists come together all in one place. Because I can take this positive energy from them and learn from them, just by being together.
Because Korea is a country where tattoos are illegal, older people often have prejudices against people with tattoos, but I think this is less than before now. In South Korea, tattoos are just as popular today as in other countries. So I don’t see or feel much difference in the Tattoo culture compared to other countries.
Do you notice any trends and changes in the tattoo industry? What would you like to change yourself?
Nowadays the world and society is changing so quickly, and that of course also applies to our tattoo industry. But no, I don’t think anything needs to change in the tattoo scene.
You do a lot of Hannya Tattoos, Japanese dragons, tigers & koi tattoos, why are people so attracted to them?
Personally, I think that in Japanese Tattoo & irezumi that subjects such as: Hannya Tattoos, Dragon Tattoos, Tigers and Koi Tattoos are a recognizable theme. So that alone adds charm enough for people to be attracted by them. However, for me a Hannya tattoo is just one of the many irezumi themes, it is not a specific preference for me as a tattoo artist
“ Personally, I think that in Japanese Tattoo & irezumi the subjects such as: Hannya Tattoos, Dragon Tattoos, Tigers and Koi Tattoos are a recognizable theme. So that alone adds charm enough for people to be attracted by them. “
How important is the relationship between the client and the tattoo artists to you?
In short, for people who undertake large-scale tattoo work as is the case in Japanese Tattoo & Irezumi, customer relationships are very important. We work together in the same space for a long period of time, so during that time it sometimes feels a bit like a brotherhood.
You once said that Namakubi is one of your favorite subjects, is that still true?
Namakubi used to be one of my favorite subjects in Japanese tattooing. Nowadays I don’t do this so often anymore. I think over the years my interest has broadened to include more different irezumi material.
Would you like to tell us something about yourself or your work?
Whatever the future brings, I am grateful to be able to do this work and I hope I can continue to work hard and long.
